Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts held a one-run edge heading into the eighth but could not hold it, and the Laredo Lemurs came back to eventually win 4-3 in 12 innings Tuesday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
After drawing a lead-off walk in the eighth, Matt Koch was sacrificed to second before coming in to score on a single by Alvaro Rondon that drew the Lemurs (7-5) even.
Both teams had opportunities in extra innings, with the best chance for Wichita (4-8) coming in the 11th. Harrison Kain led off the inning with a single and got as far as third with two outs, but ended up stranded as a liner headed toward left off the bat of Zack Cox was caught by Lemurs shortstop J.D. Pulfer to send the game into the 12th.
In the 12th, two of the first three reached on singles for Laredo, putting runners on the corners with one out against Alex Boshers (0-2). Koch hit into a fielder's choice, bringing in the go-ahead run with his fourth RBI of the series.
Brent Clevlen led off the bottom of the inning with a double off of Kyle Winkler (2-0), and a sacrifice bunt and two intentional walks later, Wichita had the bases loaded with one out for Kain. However, Scott Garner got the Wingnuts center fielder to ground into a double play to end the game.
After each team scored a run in the first, pitching took over on both sides for the next several innings. Tim Brown turned in his second quality start of the year, yielding two runs on just four hits over seven innings and retiring 10 Lemurs in a row at one point.
Wichita got him the lead in the fifth as Dustin Geiger picked up a pair of RBIs for the third straight game with a two-run single to put the Wingnuts in front 3-1.
Brown gave one of the runs back in the sixth, before the Wichita bullpen allowed Laredo to draw even in the eighth.
The Wingnuts and Lemurs continue their four-game series Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Righty Eddie Medina (0-2, 16.20) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with fellow right-hander Matt Sergey (0-0, 0.75). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
