WINGNUTS FALL IN EXTRAS
The Wichita Wingnuts held a 3-2 lead late but could not hold it as the Laredo Lemurs rallied back for a 4-3 victory in 12 innings last night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. With the contest tied at one, Wichita took their first lead of the night in the fifth, as Dustin Geiger brought in a pair with a single, the third straight game Geiger has driven in two. Laredo pulled one back in the sixth, then drew even in the eighth on an Alvaro Rondon RBI single, sending the Wingnuts into extra innings for the first time in 2016. Both teams had chances to win it in extras with the Wingnuts best chance coming in the 11th. With runners on the corners and two outs, Zack Cox hit a line drive that seemed destined for left field, but Lemur shortstop J.D. Pulfer dove to his right and caught it to end the threat. In the next half inning, Matt Koch brought the eventual winning run in for Laredo with a fielder's choice, his fourth RBI of the series. Wichita had another chance in the bottom of the 12th to at least extend the game if not win it, but Scott Garner induced an inning-ending double play that gave the Lemurs the series-evening win.
BROWN STRONG AGAIN
Veteran right-hander Tim Brown turned in his second quality start of the season Tuesday, allowing two runs on just four hits in seven innings for the Wingnuts. Brown has now been handed a no-decision in both of his quality starts this year, as the bullpen has been unable to hold the leads he has left with in those contests. In his lone win so far was actually the start he gave up the most runs so far this year, when he yielded five runs over seven innings at Joplin on the last road trip.
GEIGER GETTING GOING
After going the first nine games this season without driving in a run, Dustin Geiger has collected two RBIs in each of the last three for the Wingnuts. On Sunday, the former Chicago Cubs farmhand picked up his first RBI of the year when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and added a second when he drew a bases loaded walk later in the game. Monday, Geiger went 3-for-5 with a home run and the go-ahead RBI single that proved to be the winner. Last night, he drove in two with a single that gave the Wingnuts a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
