Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts tied their season low with six hits Wednesday night as they fell 7-1 to the Laredo Lemurs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Pitching dominated early, as both Eddie Medina (0-3) and Matt Sergey (1-0) held the offenses in check through four innings. Medina allowed just one hit over the first four innings, while Sergey wiggled out of a couple jams early by racking up the strikeouts.

In the fifth, the defense started to let Wichita (4-9) down. With one on and one out, an error opened things up for Laredo (8-5) who used the extra out they were afforded in the frame to break the scoreless deadlock. J.D. Pulfer singled in a run, while a second run scored on the play thanks to the second Wingnuts error of the inning. Ty Morrison then capped the three-run frame with a double to make it 3-0.

The Lemurs then did damage again with two outs in the next frame as Travis Denker homered for the second straight game, taking Medina deep for a two-run shot.

The visitors then scored two more insurance runs in the ninth, drawing a pair of bases loaded walks from Wichita reliever Richard Ruff.

Once Laredo got the lead they went into shutdown mode, as the Wingnuts did not get any hits after the fourth until the ninth. The combination of Sergey and reliever Luis De La Cruz combined to strike out 10 total in their outings, and allowed just two base runners, a walk and an error, in innings five through eight.

Wichita's lone run of the night came in the ninth. Richard Prigatano started the inning with a double, and came around to break the shutout on an RBI single by Brent Dean.

The Wingnuts will aim to earn a split of the four-game set with the Lemurs as the set concludes Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Southpaw Charlie Leesman (0-1, 3.85) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with righty Troy Marks (0-1, 3.37). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
