St. Paul Saints News Release

JOPLIN, MO - Game one of the doubleheader between the St. Paul Saints started at Joe Becker Stadium on Tuesday night. It finished on Wednesday on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. The Saints led 4-0 when rain halted play on Tuesday evening and won by that score against the Joplin Blasters.

In the second inning Angelo Songco and Tony Thomas reached on back-to-back walks. Willie Argo dropped down a bunt single and pitcher Josh Hodges through the ball away allowing Songco to score and sending Thomas to third. Argo stole second and then a wild pitch scored Thomas and advanced Argo to third to make it 2-0. Sam Maus' sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Aaron Gretz then hit his first professional home run, a solo shot to right, making it 4-0.

All of that occurred Tuesday night. On Wednesday Jeff Shields took the mound for the Saints and was brilliant in his 5.0 innings of work allowing three hits while walking one and striking out seven to pick up the victory. It was the first shutout of the season for the Saints.
