GARY, IN - Kansas City T-Bone Vladimir Frias hit a line drive to right field with runners at first and second and two out in the bottom of the 9th but RailCat Masato Fukae threw a brilliant ball to catcher Jose Gonzalez who tagged out Brandon Tierney to end the game. The phenomenal game-ending play preserved a 3-2 victory for the Gary SouthShore RailCats (6-7) in a thrilling game against the division rival Kansas City T-Bones (6-7).
Charle Rosario put the Cats in position to win with his second quality start of the season. The 'Ace' went 6.2 innings giving up two runs on six hits. The veteran struck out three while pounding the strike zone the whole night. Brett Zawacki got the loss for the Bones coming out of the bullpen and letting up an 8th inning run to the RailCats. Johnny Shuttlesworth started for KC going 5.0 innings giving up two runs on five hits and striking out eight.
The RailCats got on the board first with a Cameron Newell leadoff triple in the first inning. Alex Crosby then hit an infield single that scored Newell to put the Cats on top.
The T-Bones claimed the lead in the third on RBIs by Frias and Tyler Massey. The T-Bones didn't score again.
Newell again started things off with an extra-base hit in the fifth. Crosby and Brennan Metzger walked to load the bases for Jeremy Hamilton. The cleanup hitter knocked home Newell on a sacrifice fly.
The middle of the RailCats lineup continued their struggle from last night, striking out in each of their first nine plate appearances. Jose Sermo broke the streak in the 8th with a double to center field. He scored on a Jose Gonzalez base hit to give the Cats the 3-2 lead.
Closer Taylor Black took the mound in the ninth and let two base runners reach. The phenomenal throw by Fukae gave the save to Black and gave the dramatic win to the RailCats.
The RailCats and T-Bones battle again on Wednesday, June 1st at 7:05 for game three of the four game series. You can catch the action starting with the Mansard's Pre-Game Show at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and online at railcatsbaseball.com.
