
Wingnuts Hand Birds 6th Straight Loss with 4-3 Walk-Off

WICHITA, KS- The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-35) continued their week-long roadtrip on Friday night, opening up a four-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts, looking to snap a five-game losing streak. The Birds received a terrific performance from starting pitcher Stephen Bougher, but the Wingnuts battled back in the bottom of the 9th inning for a 4-3 walk of win on Friday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.

The Canaries jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in to the top half of the 1st inning on Friday night with Blake Schmit scoring on a Michael Pair two-out RBI Single. The Birds extended their lead in the top of the 4th with Jake Taylor hitting a lead-off single, later scoring on a Ozney Guillen RBI ground out.

Taylor extended the Canaries lead again in the top of the 6th inning when he hit a one-out, solo homerun over the left field wall. The blast was Taylor's seventh of the season, and gave the Birds a 3-1 lead going into the 7th inning.

Stephen Bougher put together his best performance of the season, allowing two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, pickin up three strikeouts along the way.  Bougher (1-5, 5.03 ERA) left the game with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning after giving up an RBI triple to Harrison Kain. Dylan Thompson came out of the Canaries bullpen in a one run game. Thompson forced Leo Vargas, how hit a fly ball to shallow centerfield with Ethan Chapman catching the ball for the second out, and throwing home to get the runner at the plate for the final out of the inning.

The Canaries carried the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning before closer Madison Boer came in looking for his 6th save of the season. Boer (0-4, 6.52 ERA) recorded a strikeout against lead-off batter T.J.
Mittelstaedt before giving up four straight singles, including a busted bat single into right field off the bat of Brennen Salgado, to bring home the winning run.

Wingnuts starting pitcher Tim Brown picked up a no decision after giving up three runs on nine hits over eight innings. Relief pitcher Seth Harvey (2-0, 2.57 ERA) picked up the win after putting together a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth.

Taylor once again paced the Canaries offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with his 2nd home run of the roadtrip. Pair also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and has now hit safely in four of his last five games.

The Canaries return home on Tuesday, July 19th when they open up a three-game series against their North Division rivals, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
