WINNIPEG, MB- The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-25) scored in each of the first five innings and held on for a 9-5 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (28-26).

RailCats starting pitcher Zach Staniewicz struggled in his second start for the team. The knuckleballer was dominant four nights ago in Fargo, but couldn't find the strike zone early.

Staniewicz walked four of the first six batters he faced to allow the Goldeyes' first run. A Maikol Gonzalez single pushed across their second run of the 1st inning to make it 2-0.

The RailCats got their first run in the 2nd by cashing in on a Frank Martinez triple. Jeremy Hamilton knocked him in with a fielder's choice.

Winnipeg used the long ball in the next two innings to add to their lead. Adam Heisler hit a solo shot in the 3rd and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam slammed a three-run homer in the 4th.

The RailCats didn't score again until the 7th inning. With the score 9-1, Martinez sparked more run production. He led off the inning with a single, advanced on a Hamilton double and three runs scored in the inning on two more base hits.

The RailCats loaded the bases with the score 9-4 in the 9th inning. The Goldeyes turned to former RailCat Eric Eadington to get out of the jam. One run came across but the Harvard graduation got a ground ball to end the game.

Staniewicz pitched all eight innings for the Cats and did not allow a run in the last three innings. He gave up nine earned runs on 10 hits to earn the loss. Duke von Schamann got the win for Winnipeg by pitching 6.2 strong innings.

One day removed from setting a season-high in strikeouts, the RailCats only struck out one time. Martinez, Hamilton and John Holland all had multi-hit days. The RailCats did not commit an error.

The RailCats and Goldeyes continue their series tomorrow night in Canada with the first pitch at 6:00 PM. Coverage begins at 5:35 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
