
Explorers Strike Early to Win Game 1

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The AirHogs fell to the Sioux City Explorers 7-5 in the opener of a 3-game set in Sioux City Friday. Leon Byrd finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, a run scored and a walk. The Explorers got to starter Matt Shepherd for all 7 runs over the first 4 frames. Matt Koch, Jacob Kuebler and Ralph Henriquez combined to drive in 2 apiece in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Austin Gallagher got 2 back for the AirHogs in the 4th on a 2-RBI double off Sioux City starter Bryan Escanio. The team would add 2 in the 5th on a solo home run by Juan Sanchez and an RBI base hit by Byrd. The blast was the 7th of the year for Sanchez.
David Wayne Russo, Roman Madrid and Carlos Misell combined to hold Sioux City scoreless from the 5th through the 8th. In the 9th, Byrd picked up an RBI on an infield base hit to score Burt Reynolds for a 2nd time, but the AirHogs could get no closer.
Shepherd took his 4th loss since joining the AirHogs in late May, while starter Escanio, who surrendered 4 runs over 5 innings, picked up his 3rd win for the Explorers. Conor Overton earned his 7th save by stranding 2 after allowing the RBI single to Byrd in the 9th.
