Wichita Wind Surge News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Wind Surge needed just one run tonight as they blanked the Cardinals in game five of the series. The Wichita pitching staff recorded their eighth shutout of the season to lead the way.
Locked in a pitcher's duel, game five remained scoreless until the eighth inning when Wichita crossed the plate for the first time tonight. Entering the inning with only two hits on the night, the Wind Surge were able to record their third hit of the night off the bat of Austin Martin to put a runner across home. Trey Cabbage drew a walk in the inning to get on base. Springfield then decided to go with a pitching change and bring in Jacob Bosiokovic after Cabbage drew a walk. Bosiokovic tried to pick-off Cabbage at first, and instead threw the ball past first base and allowed Cabbage all the way to third base. Martin then delivered the go-ahead RBI with a rip to center field and the Surge were the first on the board.
Wichita added another run in the ninth off another RBI single. Leobaldo Cabrera reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second to land in scoring position. With two outs in the frame, Andrew Bechtold drove in Bechtold with another line drive to center field. In the bottom of the ninth, Erik Manoah Jr. recorded a strikeout and two pop-outs to complete the shutout for Wichita.
Jordan Balazovic pitched a gem in his 13th start of the season. Balazovic threw 6.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four hits while striking out six batters. Adam Lau continued the trend with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Lau allowed just one hit and struck out two in his outing. Erik Manoah Jr. closed out the 9th to solidify the shutout.
NOTES: Andrew Bechtold extended his hitting streak to eight games. Leobaldo Cabrera seven game hit streak ended.
COMING UP: Wichita will play the series finale against the Springfield Cardinals tomorrow afternoon (8/21). First pitch is set for 1:05 pm from Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. Wichita will start RHP Chris Vallimont (4-5, 5.87 ERA) against Springfield's LHP Dalton Roach (5-8, 5.93 ERA). RADIO/TV: KGSO 1410 AM and 93.9 FM, MiLB.TV and Windsurge.com.
