Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Overage forward Leif Mattson scored a pair of goals and Adam Beckman became the first in the WHL to reach 40 on Sunday night as the Spokane Chiefs saw their winning streak extended to five games with a 5-3 victory over the Everett Silvertips.
Trailing 2-0 entering the second frame after Everett's Ethan Regnier and Jake Christiansen tallied markers in the first, the Chiefs were dominant in the second period, scoring four. Mattson got Spokane on the board with a power play goal at 2:44 and followed with his second score at 8:18 when he got behind the Silvertips' defense and beat Calgary Flames prospect Dustin Wolf over the glove.
Luke Toporowski added a one-timer from the slot with the Chiefs on the power play at 9:07 to put Spokane on top 3-2, a lead they never relinquished. The goal was the 50th of Toporowski's career.
Beckman, a Minnesota Wild prospect, extended his lead over all WHL goal-scorers at 15:38 to give Spokane a 4-2 lead. Christiansen added his second goal of the night at 17:04, but the Chiefs clung to a 4-3 lead entering the final break.
A back-and-forth third period yielded only an empty-netter by Cordel Larson that sealed the win for the Chiefs. Eli Zummack extended his point streak to 11 games with an assist in the contest, and Beckman's score gave him goals in five straight.
In a battle of NHL prospects between the pipes, Los Angeles Kings prospect Lukas Parik was 26-of-29 for Spokane while Wolf ended the night 20-of-24. The Chiefs went 2-for-3 on the power play and held the Silvertips 1-for-2.
