(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 4-1 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
Somerset struck first in the third inning on a two-run double to left-center field by Scott Kelly off of Ducks starter Bobby Blevins. RBI singles by Vinny Zarrillo in the fifth and Eric Farris in the sixth extended the lead to 4-0.
Mike Blanke closed the gap to 4-1 in the seventh with a solo home run to left. Long Island put the tying runs on base in the eighth, but they could not pull even.
Patriots starter Jeremy Horst (2-0) earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three. Blevins (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings.
