Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-15) saw a win slip from their grips on Sunday afternoon, when the Lincoln Saltdogs (18-4) rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Canaries, 6-5. Doug Johnson pitched 6.1 innings allowing three runs on six hits, but had to settle for a no decision when sloppy defense allowed the lead to slip away.
The Canaries took the lead in the fourth inning. Dennis Anderson walked and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by David Hoffman. Anderson stole third and after Kyle Kmiecik walked, Chris Hall singled to score Anderson for a 1-0 Canaries lead. With two outs Sammy Juarez hit a ground ball to Saltdogs shortstop Ryan Priddy. Priddy threw the ball away at first base allowing Kmiecik and Hall to score for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chad Hermansen led off with a double and Abner Arroyo followed with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to extend the Canaries lead to 5-0.
The Saltdogs would steal the victory from the Canaries grasp in seventh. Kevin Sullivan singled and Jose Torres homered to make it 5-2. Paul Powell doubled and took third base on a wild pitch. Cory Harris singled to score Powell and cut the Canaries lead to 5-3. Jay Yaconetti reached on an error by Chris Hall to put runners on first and second. The Saltdogs loaded the bases when Bryan Warner reached on an error by shortstop Sammy Juarez. Pichi Balet grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Harris and made it 5-4. Josh Patton capped the rally with a single that scored Yaconetti to tie the game and advance Balet to third base. Patton got caught in a run-down between first and second base that saw Sammy Juarez drop the ball and allow Balet to score before the final out was recorded. Balet's run gave the Saltdogs their 6-5 win.
Jason Cierlik (2-1) suffered the loss allowing an unearned run on two hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Jarret Gardner (2-0) picked up the win for Lincoln and Jerrod Fuell got his sixth save of the year.
The Canaries hit the road on Tuesday when they will visit the St. Joe Blacksnakes in St. Joseph, MO.
