Wilkerson Promoted to Baysox

Frederick, Md. -On Wednesday night, Steve Wilkerson was called up to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. The first time he has received a promotion to the Eastern League, the Keys second baseman becomes the ninth Frederick player to move up a level this year.

In 66 games with the Keys, Wilkerson, 24, hit .245 with one home run, 18 RBIs, four triples and nine doubles. The former Clemson Tiger comes off a good June at the plate, where he batted .372 in 14 games. On Monday night, he wrapped up a career-high eight-game hitting streak. During that stretch hit .370 (10-for-27) and saw his average climb nearly 20 points.

Originally from Roswell, GA, Wilkerson spent all of 2015 with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. There, he was named a South Atlantic League All Star and placed sixth among Orioles farmhands in batting average (.286). Wilkerson was selected by the Orioles in the eighth round of the 2014 draft out of Clemson. A three-time, second-team All-ACC selection, the infielder led or tied for the club lead in home runs, RBIs, doubles, total bases and slugging percentage as a senior.

The Keys play game three of four against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Right-hander Franderlin Romero (4-1, 3.45) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Hillcats righty Mitch Brown (2-6, 5.20).
