Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Myrtle Beach plated two runs in each of the final two innings en route to a 5-3 victory over the Dash in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark.
In the top of the sixth, Myrtle Beach tied the game against the Dash's bullpen. Southpaw Ryan Riga, who had been strong until this frame, gave up a single and a walk before handing the ball to Euclides Leyer (0-3), who allowed a two-out infield single by Andrew Ely.
Myrtle Beach (7-7, 43-41) scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh due to some command issues from Leyer, who hit three batters in the frame. The Pelicans' two runs came from a Yasiel Balaguert RBI single and a plunking of Jeffrey Baez with the bases loaded.
Right-hander Robinson Leyer, Euclides' younger brother, made his first start for the Dash (6-7, 34-49) since arriving in Winston-Salem from the Double-A Birmingham Barons on Tuesday.
Leyer delivered 2.1 innings of work, only giving up one hit, a solo home run from Myrtle Beach clean-up hitter Ian Rice in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the third, the Dash countered the early Myrtle Beach run with two of their own as Michael Suiter led off the inning with a single. He advanced to third on a Danny Mendick double. On a pickoff attempt, the catcher Rice's throw to third base airmailed third baseman Jason Vosler, allowing Suiter to even the score at one. Mason Robbins followed with an RBI single to right field to give the Dash a 2-1 lead.
Winston-Salem added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Chris O'Dowd, who went 2-for-4 on the day, knocked a ground rule double past right fielder Daniel Spingola. Robbins tacked on his second RBI with another single to center field to make the score 3-1.
The Dash strive to split the series on Thursday as they send left-hander Tanner Banks (3-0, 2.96 ERA) to the mound to face off with Pelicans right-hander Trevor Clifton (4-5, 2.76 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on 600 AM-WSJS, wsjs.com and MiLB.tv.
This series finale completes the homestand with Myrtle Beach at BB&T Ballpark, with a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday. For your tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
