
Six-Run Third Dooms Dash in Doubleheader Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A six-run third inning propelled Myrtle Beach to a 8-3 victory over Winston-Salem in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark.
Dash starter Spencer Adams (7-7), the third-best prospect in the White Sox system per Baseball America, left the game in the third due to an lower body injury. The 20-year-old fell to the ground and grabbed his right leg after an offering to Rashad Crawford in the third inning.
Trailing 3-0 after two frames, the Pelicans (6-7, 42-41) began their big inning. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from Daniel Spingola and Erick Castillo, Ely delivered an RBI double to make it a 3-1 game. The next batter Charcer Burks delivered an RBI single that closed the Pelicans within one at 3-2.
After Adams' injury, Manny Martinez came in and immediately yielded an RBI double to Crawford that tied the game at three. Later in the frame, with Jason Vosler up in a bases-loaded, one-out situation, Martinez issued a wild pitch that allowed a run to score to make it 4-3. Vosler then stroked a two-run double in the frame to up Myrtle Beach's lead to 6-3.
The Pelicans added another score off Martinez in the fifth on an RBI double by Vosler to make it 7-3. Myrtle Beach added a final tally in the seventh on an unearned run against Dash right-hander Yelmison Peralta. Peralta, who made his High-A debut on Wednesday, went two innings, during which allowed two hits and one walk.
With the loss, Winston-Salem (6-6, 34-48) falls to 6-11 against Myrtle Beach this season.
It looked promising for the Dash early on when Winston-Salem struck against Pelicans starter Jonathan Martinez (5-5) in the second. With a runner on first and one out, Telvin Nash stroked an RBI double to give the Dash a 1-0 edge. Toby Thomas followed with an RBI single to put Winston-Salem up two. Thanks to his 2-for-3 effort, Thomas is now 21-for-41 to begin the second half.
After a Brett Austin walk, Cleuluis Rondon capped the scoring with an RBI single to center to make it 3-0 Dash.
The right-hander would settle down and throw a seven-inning complete game, tossing seven innings and three earned runs. It was Martinez's second professional complete game.
The Dash strive for a doubleheader split in Wednesday's finale, which will begin at approximately 8:15 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem sends right-hander Robinson Leyer (first High-A appearance of 2016) against Myrtle Beach righty Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.66 ERA).
