San Diego Wildcats News Release
San Diego, CA. After a heartbreaking overtime loss, the San Diego Wildcats came prepared to redeem themselves and did it with a decisive win over the Las Vegas Venom, 140-112. The contest got off to a slow start as it seemed like both teams had settled into a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The tempo picked up as Cardell Butler wowed the crowd with a spectacular behind-the-back shot to take the Cats first lead of the game. To keep that momentum going, Ballaholic followed with a sweet three-pointer. The Venom, however, tried to combat the shift in energy by posting a couple of impressive three-point plays. As the first quarter drew to a close, the Wildcats had amassed a double-digit lead and were firmly in control of the game.
Vegas successfully reduced the lead as SD turned the ball over three times to start the second quarter. Jamal Kendrick quickly answered the call-to-action as he posted two 3-pointers from above the arc. Shots that didn't fall for the Venom during the first quarter wee now landing. That coupled with a fierce defensive stance allowed Vegas to get back into the game and retake the lead with 2:30 left in the half. As a team leader, Butler sparked the team with a three-pointer to again shift the momentum in the Wildcats' favor. As the clock ticket to double zero, the Venom showed their frustration as the coach chastised his players for ridiculous behavior. The Wildcats entered the half with a slight four-point edge, 59-55.
Entering the second half, talking back to the referees earned Vegas' Head Coach a tech starting a steady downward slide for the whole team. The Cats capitalized on the infighting with impressive shots by key team members including Mike McNair's back-to-back three pointers. Phil Givins didn't want to be left out of the three-point fest, so he added another and followed with a sweet lay-up. As the quarter drew to a close, the Venom saw the game slipping away with SD out front by 18. Like pouring salt in a wound, the Wildcats ended the game with a pair of slam dunks by Aaron Hand and Wade Curry. The final score clearly illustrated the superior team as San Diego won, 140-112.
