Express co-chair celebrity sports auction
November 13, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jersey Express News Release
Newark, NJ. The ABA Newark Express participated in the annual IYO/NJ Youth Corps, Crest CDC Celebrity Sports Auction and were Co-Chairs of the event. The yearly auction featured sports memorabilia from the Newark Express, NY Yankees, NY Mets, NY Giants, NY Jets, NJ Nets, NY Knicks and the Newark Bears to name a few. Head Coach Ron Moore (formerly of the Detroit Pistons) was the Celebrity Host for the annual event to raise money and awareness for the Community Based Youth Organizations.
The International Youth Organization (IYO) is one of the leading multi-service community-based, non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged youth and their families in Newark and surrounding communities since 1970. IYO is Essex County's largest private service provider for youth and young adults, ages 16 to 25, who are out of school, out of work and without a high school diploma, and it has administered programs, such as the State's New Jersey Youth Corps, for this population with years of satisfactory results, utilizing federal, state and local government funds, as well as many private sources.
The Newark Express began their relationship with IYO/NJ Youth Corps in 2005 under the direction and leadership of Mrs. Wallace, Executive Director of the program, and affectionately known in the organization as "Mother Wallace." The goal is to provide insight into these young men and women regarding the operation of a professional sports franchise. Ultimately some of these young adults will come from the program, directly into the workforce, using the Newark Express as a link. Game Day Operations for the Newark Express consist of IYO youth helping with the set up-up and breakdown of the day's events.
Participating in the event were Newark Express Director of Community Affairs, Kirk Quockco, Express players: Elijah Thorpe, Zakee Boyd, Dwayne Howell and Phillip Smith, all of Newark. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
