Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Wild Things released two players and re-signed another Friday, according to team officials.
Outfielder, Joe Cuervo and left-handed pitcher, Keith Strickland were both released prior to the Friday game, and infielder, Ryan Ellis was resigned.
Cuervo, a fan favorite, had a slow start with a .157 average for the 2003 season, following wrist injury that benched him for several weeks of the season. Cuervo led the Wild Things in home runs (14) during the 2002 season when he averaged .256.
"Our Joe Cuervo Bobble Head night will still take place on July 29th," explained Ross Vecchio, general manager of the Wild Things. "We know that promotions based on specific players are chancy. You never know what's going to happen with the roster. But our fans love Joe. They voted him to be a bobble head on the Wild Thing website poll. We'll still give those bobble heads away because we want to honor Joe. He'll always be a special part of Wild Things' history."
Left-handed pitcher Keith Strickland, who pitched only 5.2 innings of relief in six games this season, was also released.
Infielder Ryan Ellis, who was released several weeks ago due to a back injury, and served as a coach, returned to the Wild Things' roster Friday.
"It's always tough to release players," said Kent Tekulve, director of baseball operations for the Wild Things. "It was particularly difficult to release Cuervo because he has been with the team since we started in 2002. He worked in the sales office during the off-season, and he even starred in our TV commercial. He is an integral part of this organization, and we'll miss him."
The Wild Things face the Chillicothe Paints for the final game of their three-day series Saturday at a special early game time. First pitch for the game, scheduled to be televised on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh is 3:35 p.m.
