Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Washington, Pa.- The Lake Erie Crushers fall to the Washington Wild Things, 6-3, as the Crushers were able get eight hits but would leave eight on base.
The loss for the Crushers (23-31) is only their second loss in their first six games following the All-Star Break. The win for the Wild Things (25-32) marks their sixth win against the Crushers in nine games over the season series.
Lake Erie was able to jump on the board first. Austin Prott singled to start the first inning. He moved to third as Jose Barraza hit a ball that bounced over the fence in left-center field for a ground rule double. Prott would come in to score on an Anderson Hidalgo groundout. The Crushers scored 12 runs in the first inning over the three game series.
Down one, the Wild Things went to work in the bottom of the first inning. After Crushers starter Brad Zambron (2-4) was able to get the first two out of the inning, he then walked Sam Mende and Scott Kalamar. With two on base, David Popkins then hit his 18th home run of the season, putting Washington up by two runs.
The Wild Things would add another run in the bottom of the second inning as Lee Orr led off with a home run to right field.
Washington would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning. Popkins led off and was hit by a pitch. He would quickly move to third on a single off the bat of the next batter, Matt Ford. Ford then stole second and both runners would score on an error by Crushers first baseman Emmanuel Quiles. The batter, Austin Wobrock, reached first base on the play.
The Crushers would respond with two runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, the Crushers did their damage as Chandler Brock singled to start the rally. Barraza then reached first on an error by the Wild Things shortstop, Wobrock. Brock stole second, and with runners on first and third, Hidalgo hit a single to score Prott and move Barraza to second. Juan Sanchez then singled to score Barraza but that would be all the Crushers would get in the inning and the ballgame.
Lake Erie had a chance to do more damage in the seventh inning when Quiles led off with a ground rule double. Washington starter Luke Wilkins (5-2) retired the next two Crushers hitters and was relieved by Steve Messner. Prott and Brock would both walk to load the bases but Barraza struck out to end the threat.
The Crushers put up impressive statistics in the series despite tonight's loss. They won the series by scoring 29 runs on 37 hits. Brock went 6-15 with seven RBIs in the series. Barraza went 7-13 with four doubles. Prott went 1-4 in tonight's game advancing his on base streak to 22 consecutive games.
Zambron would go 5 1/3 innings for the Crushers allowing five hits and six runs, five of them were earned, picking up the loss. Brad Duffy, Daniel DeSimone and Matt Brankle threw a combined 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball out of the Crushers bullpen. Wilkins went 6 2/3 innings and picked up the win as he gave up seven hits but only allowed three runs, one being earned. Messner, Matt Purnell and Jonathan Kountis (6), who picked up the save, pitched a combined 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the Wild Things bullpen.
The Crushers will start a three game home series with the Traverse City Beach Bums beginning on Friday. Lake Erie will start lefty Todd Kibby (0-1, 3.46) and the Beach Bums will counter with right hander Luis DeJesus (5-2, 2.61). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
