
Slammers Drop Series Finale to CornBelters 10-3

Normal, IL- Seven different Normal CornBelters (33-24) have a multi-hit game in their 10-3 win over the Joliet Slammers (23-34) on Thursday night.
The Slammers picked up right where they left off on Wednesda- beating the CornBelters 16-2- against pitcher Mike Schweiss. CF Phil Bates walked to lead off. He scored on double to the right-field corner by RF Nate Roberts. SS Alfredo Rodriguez knocked in Roberts with a double to left, putting the Slammers up 2-0 after the inning. Joliet had a chance to score more, stranding three on base in the frame.
CornBelters CF Mark Mikowski started the bottom of the first with a bang, homering off pitcher Kevin Walter. 2B Santiago Chirino singled and was driven by a 3B Richard Lucas double. 1B Carlos Lopez made a diving stop to get the Slammers out of the first with the score tied at 2-2.
The CornBelters manufactured the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second. RF Ozney Guillen singled to lead off. CF Cameron Monger moved him over with a bunt single. Guillen would come in to score on a ground ball by C Jim Vahalik to the right side of the infield, putting the CornBelters up 3-2.
Normal added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Guillen and Monger both reached before the lead runner was thrown out at third by Walter. Micowski knocked in Monger with a ground-rule double to left. 2B Santiago Chirino drove in Vahalik before Patrick Dyer came in and got the Slammers out of the inning. The CornBelters led 5-2 after fourth frame.
Normal added three runs in the fifth against Dyer with five consecutive batters reaching base. With one out DH Sam Judah singled. Guillen was hit by a pitch before Monger walked. An infield single by Vahalik brought in one run and a base-knock by Miscowski scored the another. The CornBelters would score one more to extend their lead to 8-2.
Joliet put a run on the board against reliever Horatio Acosta with two outs in the sixth. Bates reached second when his fly ball to center was misplayed. Roberts knocked him in with a double to the right field corner, making it an 8-3 game.
The CornBelters added two more runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Richard Lucas. Normal would ultimately top the Slammers 10-3. Kevin Walter (1-6) took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Horatio Acosta (5-0) earned the win out of the pen for the CornBelters. Alfredo Rodriguez is our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the game with three hits and two RBI. Joliet is back in action against the Windy City Thunderbolts for a three-game series.
