WASHINGTON, PA-The Washington Wild Things defeated the Lake Erie Crushers by a score of 6-3 in the finale of their three game series Thursday night at CONSOL Energy Park. Starting pitcher Luke Wilkins surrendered only one earned run and picked up his fifth victory of the season, while Brad Zambron suffered the loss.

The Crushers were on the board in the first inning when center fielder Austin Prott hit a lead off single and later scored on a Jose Barraza double. The Wild Things answered immediately behind David Popkins's 18th home run of the season. The left fielder hit a towering shot into the parking lot and drove in third baseman Sam Mende and right fielder Scott Kalamar. In the bottom of the second, Lee Orr added a solo home run, his seventh of the season, and Washington extended their lead to 4-1. The Wild Things increased their lead to five runs in the bottom of the fourth when they capitalized on a Lake Erie error that scored two.

Wilkins retired 11 consecutive batters before the Crushers began to the inch their way back in the top of the sixth. Third baseman Anderson Hidalgo and shortstop Juan Sanchez collected a pair of singles to drive in right fielder Chandler Brock and Jose Barraza. In the top of the seventh, Lake Erie loaded the bases, but reliever Steve Messner slammed the door shut and worked his way out of the jam, keeping the Wild Things ahead by three.

Messner, along with reliever Matt Purnell, allowed just one hit in their 2.1 innings of work. Closer Jonathan Kountis followed the trend of solid relief pitching in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season, tying Jim Popp for the most career saves in Wild Things history.

The Wild Things travel to Evansville, Indiana to square off against the Otters in a three-game series beginning on Friday, July 24. First pitch for Friday's contest is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the game with Randy Gore, "the voice of the Wild Things," on WJPA 95.3 FM or follow live in-game tweets @washwildthings. The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park for a double header against the River City Rascals on Wednesday, July 29 beginning at 6:05 p.m. For tickets, call 724-250-9555, visit www.washingtonwildthings.com or stop by the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.
