Wild Rally Pushes Clippers Past PawSox in 10

(Columbus, OH) - Tyler Holt's walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning won the game for Columbus after a controversial sacrifice fly by Audy Ciriaco had tied it in the 9th as the Clippers rallied to top the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-2 in 10 innings, and take their second straight in the three-game series Saturday night at Huntington Park.
Pawtucket led 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth and had closer Heath Hembree on the mound, but Jerry Sands' leadoff fly ball to right-center was dropped as the centerfielder Quintin Berry and right fielder Rusney Castillo miscommunicated and banged gloves allowing the ball to drop and leave Sands at second base.
After Sands advanced to third on a close play following James Ramsey's flyout to center, Ciriaco lifted a ball to right that was caught by Castillo for the second out. Sands tagged and beat Castillo's throw to the plate with the tying run, but Pawtucket believed Sands had left third base too early when tagging up.
The PawSox immediately appealed, but it was denied and the run was allowed to stand. Manager Kevin Boles was ejected by home plate umpire Tom Honec while arguing the call. Two other Pawtucket players, Luke Montz and Quintin Berry, were ejected for arguing strikeout calls in the 9th and 10th innings respectively.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the 10th from reliever Austin Adams (1-1), Hembree (0-1) allowed a leadoff double to Michael Martinez in the bottom of the inning. Francisco Lindor then laid down a sacrifice bunt on which Hembree tried to get Martinez going to third base, but the throw was not nearly in time leaving runners on the corners.
That set the stage for Holt, who drilled a pitch off the warning track in right field for the game-winning hit that plated Martinez from third base. Hembree, who was charged with his second blown save and first loss of the season, had not allowed a run in nine appearances prior to Saturday's contest.
Starting pitchers Brian Johnson of Pawtucket and Nick Maronde of Columbus dueled through 5 1/2 scoreless innings before the Clippers' first-baseman Jesus Aguilar drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson otherwise pitched well, allowing just one run and three hits in six innings of work.
Pawtucket scored each of its runs in the seventh inning, each charged to Maronde who was replaced by Jeff Manship with the bases loaded and one out. Deven Marrero greeted Manship with a sacrifice fly, then the next batter Jemile Weeks grounded a two-out RBI double to make the score 2-1.
Weeks went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double to pace the PawSox's seven-hit attack, while Marrero went 2-for-3 with an RBI. No Columbus player had more than one hit on the night.
The PawSox will try to avoid being swept in a series for the first time this season as they play the finale of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. Left-hander Henry Owens (2-1, 3.67) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Clippers counter with righty Toru Murata (1-0, 3.86). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
Following the six-game road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a seven-game homestand, beginning with three games against Indianapolis starting on Monday, May 11th.
