Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In a game that was marked by brilliant performances on the mound by hurlers from both clubs, it was a wild pitch that allowed the Drive (68-57, 32-23) to capture a 2-1 victory Sunday night against the Charleston RiverDogs (60-65, 29-27).
With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Acosta's (5-4) fifty-nine foot curve ball trickled past catcher Hector Rabago, allowing Zach Gentile to race home for the eventual game-winner.
The second baseman got the inning going after Acosta retired the first two batters, by doubling to left. Following an intentional walk to Jeremy Hazelbaker, the duo pulled the trigger on double steal. Acosta then issued a walk to Reynaldo Rodriguez, loading the bases, before the wild pitch.
Charleston scored in their first at bat, as Rob Lyerly's groundout plated Kelvin Castro, who doubled. But from there Greenville starter Kendal Volz retired the final seven batters he faced during his 3.0 inning outing, before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Pedro Perez entered in the top of the fourth, with a 1-1 tie, and was equally masterful. The right-hander penned 4.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and a walk, while picking up three strikeouts.
The only trouble that Perez ran into was in his final frame, as he faced a situation with runners on the corners and only one out. He made quick work, however, of the next two RiverDogs, striking out Kevin Mahoney and inducing Emerson Landoni to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Anatanaer Batista (5-5) was perfect over the final two innings, retiring all six batters that he faced, including two strikeouts.
Making his RiverDogs' debut, Shane Greene had the look of a seasoned vet over 6.0 innings. The righty allowed a run, coming on Rodriguez's RBI-single in the third, on four hits, a walk and fanning an impressive seven batters.
With the win, the Drive remain 2.0 games behind Southern Division-leading Asheville, who had won earlier in the day.
The Drive and RiverDogs will continue this four-game series Monday night at Fluor Field. Greenville right-hander Pete Ruiz (8-8, 4.40 ERA) will take the hill opposite Charleston's Mike Gipson, another righty who will be making his RiverDogs' debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
In addition, the Drive and Michelin will recognize the Summer Reading All-Stars during tomorrow's activities, which includes a pre-game parade. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, or luxury accommodations, call (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
