Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the second straight day, the Lexington Legends scored first and set the tone early in their second straight win over the Augusta GreenJackets. The 8-2 loss on Sunday evening is Augusta's third straight and it comes following their longest winning streak of the year.
The Legends loaded the bases in the first off Chris Heston thanks to a walk, an error and a single. Kody Hinze hit into a double play to take some of the pressure off Heston but Miguel Arrendell scored from third to give Lexington the first lead of the game. Aaron Bray's two-run single in the fifth inning with two outs extended the Legends' lead to three runs.
Augusta couldn't figure out Lexington righty Tanner Bushue all game long, as he allowed just three hits and two walks over six scoreless innings while striking out four. Augusta's best threat off the righty came in the fourth when Nick Liles doubled to lead off the frame and Chris Dominguez walked to follow. Both were left stranded the end the frame as Bushue (7-8) and two Legends relievers took advantage of four double plays in the blowout win.
Lexington ripped things wide open off the Augusta bullpen in the eighth, sending ten men to the plate in an inning where the Legends scored five times. Jiovanni Mier and Jonathan Meyer each singled home runs while Aaron Bray doubled home another. A sacrifice fly and a passed ball rounded out the inning. The Jackets cracked the scoreboard in the final two frames on a two-out RBI single from Chris Dominguez in the eighth and a run-scoring hit from Juan Martinez in the ninth.
Heston (5-12) saw a personal two-game winning streak fall by the wayside in the loss, firing five innings and allowing three runs - one earned - on five hits and four walks while striking out four. The four walks were just two shy of Heston's total in his four other August starts combined.
The GreenJackets have now lost three straight after their seven-game winning streak was snapped on Friday night and will need to win the next two against the Legends to salvage the series split. Zack Wheeler (2-3, 3.74) will take the mound against Juan Minaya (4-10, 4.92) on Monday night in the third game of the series. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
