Wild & Wet Win for Whitecaps

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

The West Michigan Whitecaps survived one of the wildest and wettest finishes in their ten-year history on Saturday night in Iowa. In the end, the Whitecaps scored a 3-2, rain-shortened victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The victory evened the series at a game apiece in the 'Caps start of a 12-game road trip.

With the Whitecaps leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, play continued even when monsoon-like conditions arose. With two outs and nobody on base, the Kernels B. J. Weed hit a ball into left-center. 'Caps outfielder Victor Mendez went over to catch the ball and fell down due to the slippery conditions and the ball rolled to the wall. But 'Caps left fielder Wilton Reynolds retrieved the ball, hit shortstop Juan Gonzales and his perfect relay nipped Weed at home plate for the final out of the inning. The play became even bigger when play was then halted and unable to resume due to damage done to the field. Because five innings had been played, the game became an official win for West Michigan (18-18).

Juan Francia, Reynolds and Mike Rabelo drove in runs for the 'Caps.

Game three of the series is Sunday afternoon at 3:00 Michigan time. Troy Pickford will start on the mound for the Whitecaps.
