Dayton Dragons News Release

The Clinton Lumber Kings (14-19) and the Dayton Dragons (17-19) played home run derby on Friday night with the Dragons taking a 8-4 decision in the opening game of the four game series. Saturday afternoon was a different story as the runs were more difficult to come by. Clinton got two unearned early and held on for a 3-2 win at Alliant Energy Field.

The Lumber Kings got on the board in the home half of the second inning with two unearned runs off Dragons starter Josh Thigpen (L, 0-3). With one down Juan Senreiso reached on an error by Dayton third baseman Mark Schramek. Thigpen followed the error with a walk to Nate Gold and a single off the bat of Randall Shelley, which loaded the bases. Manny Santana picked up an easy RBI drawing the bases loaded walk to give the Lumber Kings a 1-0 advantage. Orlando Cruz tallied the second RBI of the inning with a SAC fly that plated Gold for a 2-0 Clinton lead.

The Dragons had opportunities against Lumber King starter Ben Keiter (ND) in the first and in the fourth innings. Dayton had runners at second and third with less than two outs and failed to score in either inning. The lone Dragons run off Keiter came in the third inning on a Kevin Howard RBI fielder's choice. Domonique Lewis and Junior Ruiz picked up back to back one out singles and put runners at first and third for the Dayton second baseman, who picked up his 15th RBI.

Clinton grabbed its third run of the ball game off Thigpen in the fifth. Gabriel Delgado smacked a one out triple inside the bag at first came home on a Craig Ringe RBI single to center field. Ringe was last batter that Thigpen would face on the day, as he gave way to Matt McWilliams and later Alexander Farfan.

The Dragons didn't have an answer for southpaw Kameron Loe (W, 1-1). Loe replaced Keiter and tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball before giving way to Franco Pezely (S, 3) who picked up his third save. Pezely gave up a run to Dayton in the ninth to make it close at 3-2. Ryan Hanigan led off the inning with a pinch hit single and later advanced to second on a Lewis ground out. With two down Howard picked up his second RBI of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Wong flew out to right to end the game.

The Dragons continue the four game series against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Alliant Energy Field Sunday afternoon at 3 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 2:30 PM. LHP Jan Granado (1-2, 6.30 ERA) will get the start for the Dragons. RHP Cesar Herrera (4-2, 3.46 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Lumber Kings.
