Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (APRIL 27, 2011) - Today the Dash's empty roster spot was filled by LHP Matt Wickswat, who joins the team from extended spring training. Winston-Salem had been one player shy of the Carolina League limit after RHP Justin Collop was placed on the disabled list Monday.
Wickswat pitched briefly for the Dash last season (two games, 0-0, 18.00 ERA) but spent most of 2010 with low-A Kannapolis. With the Intimidators, he went 7-7 with a 3.93 ERA and one save in 30 games, 16 starts. He struck out 113 batters in 119 innings and held opponents to a .261 batting average.
The White Sox signed Wickswat as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2008. He had spent each of the last two seasons pitching for Advanced Rookie Great Falls. He went 2-2 with a 3.66 ERA in the Pioneer League, leading the circuit in strikeouts last season with 91 in 77.1 innings.
Wickswat attended Santa Clara University, where he was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Team in 2006. After going 16-7 with a 3.47 ERA in his first two seasons, he went 1-2 with and 8.12 ERA in his final season with the Broncos. He began his college career at Gonzaga University, but did not pitch for the Bulldogs. Wickswat pitched in the Cape Cod League in 2007 for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (11 G, 5 GS, 2-2, 3.66 ERA), where he pitched alongside fellow Dash hurler Terry Doyle.
The Dash's roster has reached the Carolina League limit of 25 players.
