April 27, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RAIN RAIN GO AWAY: Last night's rainout was the first at BB&T Coastal Field this season. Tonight's doubleheader will be the Birds' first and the Nationals' fourth of 2011. The P-Nats have split two of the first three and were swept in the other. The Pelicans had four doubleheaders in 2010, sweeping two and splitting two. On August 7 of last year these two teams split a pair with Myrtle Beach taking the opener, 6-1 and Potomac winning the nightcap, 4-3.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH: We've already had seven doubleheaders in the Carolina League in 2011. The eighth and ninth will be played today as Kinston hosts Salem for two as well. Four of the previous seven have been splits and two have been road sweeps. The Pelicans look to be just the second home team to sweep a double dip, Wilmington took a pair from Potomac on April 17.
ROBBIE'S GEM: Monday's brilliant performance by Robbie Erlin was arguably the best of his career. He had the longest outing of his pro career, tossing seven shutout innings of two-hit ball. The southpaw had whiffed nine twice last year with the Hickory Crawdads. It was the first double-digit strikeout game by a Pelicans starter, Neil Ramirez struck out nine on Opening Day. Last night marked the second time a Myrtle Beach pitcher went seven innings in a start. Joe Wieland also pitched seven in Kinston on Saturday night. Erlin now leads the league in innings pitched with 22. He lowered his WHIP to a league-best 0.68. Robbie ranks second in the league with 26 strikeouts, one behind Kinston's Drew Pomeranz and his batting average against of .154 is third in the circuit behind Chris Hernandez of Salem and Pomeranz.
