
Salem Red Sox Host Annual Pink in the Park Weekend May 6-8

Salem, Va. (April 27, 2011) - The Salem Red Sox, Advanced Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will be hosting their annual Pink in the Park Weekend Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8 in collaboration with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Salem Red Sox will wear pink jerseys during the May 7 game and the bases at LewisGale Field will bear pink ribbons to heighten breast cancer awareness. Pink in the Park, spanning three games, will include the pink jersey auction, a pink t-shirt giveaway, Baseball 101 for Women and Mother's Day special events.
"It's great to be part of such a great cause and the entire Salem Red Sox organization looks forward to this weekend each year," says Todd Stephenson, general manager of the Salem Red Sox. "We hope to raise breast cancer awareness through fun activities that everyone can participate in and enjoy."
During the past two years the Salem Red Sox Pink in the Park weekend has raised a total of more than $8,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Throughout the weekend, limited edition Salem Red Sox pink t-shirts will be on sale in the souvenir store, with proceeds benefitting the Komen Greater Roanoke Affiliate, and all fans will receive pink ribbons.
In its third year, the Salem Red Sox Pink in the Park weekend is packed full of giveaways and special events to raise breast cancer awareness.
Friday, May 6
. The first 1,000 fans to arrive to the game on Friday (gates open at 6 p.m.) will receive a pink reusable shopping bag, compliments of Kroger.
. The Greater Roanoke Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will host their Auction for Komen, auctioning off a Pandora bracelet w/ Komen Charm, and many other great items!
. At the start of Friday's game, Komen volunteers and workers will participate in the Field of Dreams as they take the field with the Salem Red Sox players for the National Anthem.
Saturday, May 7
. The Salem Red Sox will host Baseball 101 for Women on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., giving any woman who is interested an opportunity to learn the rules, lingo and strategy of baseball. The event will include a tour of LewisGale Field, instruction in the clubhouse, hitting, pitching and fielding clinics, as well as a question and answer session with a Salem Red Sox staff member. The event includes a lunch with special guest speaker, Kat Werner from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Tickets are $25, with 25 percent of the proceeds going to the Komen Greater Roanoke Affiliate. All participants will receive an exclusive camp t-shirt, lunch and a reserved seat ticket for the Saturday, May 7 Salem Red Sox game. . A silent auction featuring the players' and coaching staffs' pink jerseys and the pink ribbon bases will be held during Saturday's game. Winning bidders will have their jerseys autographed on the field immediately following the game.
Sunday, May 8 - Mother's Day
. On Sunday, May 10, in honor of Mother's Day, the Salem Red Sox will welcome an honorary Manager. Fans can nominate a mom, friends or daughter, indicating why the Salem Sox should recognize that person as honorary Manager on Mother's Day. All stories must be submitted by Thursday, May 5, and all proposals must be entered on behalf of individuals that are 18 years of age or older. . The Salem Red Sox Mother's Day tradition Bombs for Moms guarantees that all fans at Sunday's game will receive a free ticket if a Salem Sox slugger swats a home run. Tickets will be valid for a designated future home game. Throughout the homestand, fans will also have the opportunity to record a special message for their Mom to be played on the videoboard on Mother's Day.
