Wichita Wins Fourth Straight Over Colorado

LOVELAND, CO- The Colorado Eagles lost their fourth straight game to the Wichita Thunder Saturday night 4-1 at the Budweiser Events Center in their regular season finale. It marked the first time all season the Eagles lost two consecutive games in regulation. The Eagles finished their third season with the best record in the Central Hockey League at 44-14-6 for 94 points and head into the playoffs next weekend against the Oklahoma City Blazers. Jon Volp made 53 saves for the Thunder and Travis Clayton recorded a hat trick for their 37th win of the season. Wichita has one more game left in the regular season on Sunday against the Blazers.

The Thunder again jumped out to an early lead scoring goals at the 1:46 and 4:33 mark of the first period. Kris Wiebe and Travis Clayton scored the goals with Ryan McLean and Joe Blaznek assisting on each of the goals. Eagles captain Greg Pankewicz set a new career high with his 47th goal of the season less than a minute later. The goal also marked his last point of the season making his career total just two points shy of 1,000. The Thunder took a 3-1 lead on another tip by Clayton at the 15:30 mark of the period, it was Wichita's second power play goal of the game. Colorado again out shot the Thunder in the period 19-6 but found themselves down two goals going into the second period.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period with Colorado out shooting the Thunder 14-11.

In the third period, tempers flared as 13 of the 21 penalties were called in the final frame. The Eagles dominated on the shot chart 21-4, but Volp was up to the challenge every time and Clayton added an empty netter making the final score 4-1.

The Governors' Cup Champion Colorado Eagles begin the 2006 Central Hockey League Playoffs against the Oklahoma City Blazers on Saturday, April 1st at the Budweiser Events Center. The game will be televised on Altitude Sports & Entertainment and starts at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available for all first round playoff games, check the Eagles website for further details.
