Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Rayz closed out their 2005-2006 home schedule on Saturday night in front of a record-breaking, standing room only attendance at the American Bank Center. A standing room only crowd of 7,584 filled the American Bank Center to close the curtain on the season, and they saw quite a game. The Rayz and the Bucks provided a back and forth thriller that needed an extra five minutes to decide the contest. In the end, Jeff Bes' second goal of the night in overtime gave the Bucks the 3-2 victory. With the overtime loss, Corpus Christi now has scored points in five of their last seven versus Laredo. The Rayz will now end the season on Sunday afternoon with a 4:00pm visit to the Laredo Entertainment Center against the Bucks.
Chris Grenville continued his recent hot hand, scoring the only goal of the first period. At 4:04 of the frame, Grenville camped out at the top of the crease and converted a Jeff Bes pass from behind the net to put the Bucks up 1-0. Minutes later, Ladislav Kouba had a shorthanded breakaway opportunity to put the Bucks up by a pair, but Scott Redi denied him to keep the score 1-0. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 13-7 in the period.
In the second period, the Bucks increased their advantage as once again the tandem of Bes and Grenville found the scoreboard. Grenville sent Bes up the ice on a two on one rush and Bes beat Reid stick side from the right circle at 9:00 of the second to give Laredo a 2-0 lead. The Rayz cut the deficit in half just 1:33 later off an offensive zone faceoff win. Chris Robertson won the draw cleanly back to Time Laurila at the right point, where he ripped a shot into the top left corner past Dov Grumet-Morris. The goal brought the Rayz within one and capped the scoring in the middle stanza. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 11-6 in the middle period.
The Rayz tied the game in third period on a power play goal when Todd Paul scored on a rebound shot from the left circle at 6:23. It was Paul's first goal as a member of the Rayz. Ryan Carter and Randy Murphy assisted on the goal. After the teams remained scoreless for the rest of regulation, Bes scored his second goal of the night at 4:34 of the overtime session to give the Bucks the 3-2.
The Rayz record moved to 22-35-6 for 50 points on the year. They finished their home record at 10-17-5. The Bucks improved their season mark at 42-15-6 and finished their road record this season at 16-11-5. Reid made 37 saves, taking the overtime loss. His record moved to 15-18-4. Grumet-Morris made 25 saves for the win, vaulting his record to 18-5-2. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 40-27. The Rayz went 1-8 on the power play and the Bucks went 0-4. The overtime loss for the Rayz was their fourth straight in an extra session.
In the Second Annual Pack the House For Charity Night, the Rayz joined forces and raised over $5,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Corpus Christi, the Nueces Child Welfare Foundation and the Corpus Christi Youth Hockey Association for the charity event. The Rayz sincerely thank the Coastal Bend community for their support.
The Rayz will conclude their eighth professional hockey season in Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm with a visit to Laredo for a rematch with the Bucks. The Rayz would like to thank all of their season ticket holders, sponsors and fans for another great year. The Rayz look forward to welcoming you back to the American Bank Center in October for the ninth season. For ticket or sponsorship information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
