Wichita Win Streak Snapped After Game-Ending Triple Play
May 17, 2024 - Texas League (TL)
Wichita Wind Surge News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The Wichita Wind Surge had their four-game win streak snapped 8-6 against the Tulsa Drillers. After bringing the leading run to the plate in the top of the ninth, Tulsa turned a game-ending triple play to gain their first win of the series.
Carson McCusker brought home Emmanuel Rodriguez on a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the first. Tanner Schobel added his sixth RBI of the series on a double to right center that scored Andrew Cossetti to give the Wind Surge a 2-0 lead. Cossetti doubled the Wind Surge advantage on a two-run home run, his fifth of the year, to left field an inning later.
Tulsa cut the four-run deficit to one in the bottom of the second on a Yeiner Fernandez two-RBI single, and a sacrifice fly against Wichita starter Marco Raya. Alerick Soularie sent a sacrifice fly of his own to right field in the following half-inning to put the Wind Surge ahead 5-3.
The Drillers duo of Brendon Davis and Diego Cartaya slapped solo home runs to the Wind Surge bullpen in the bottom half of the third, tying the game. Noah Cardenas yanked the lead back into Wichita's hands on a run-scoring double to the left-center gap in the top of the fourth.
The back-and-forth scoring stopped for the time being, with the Wind Surge up 6-5 until Tulsa tallied three runs after the stretch in the bottom of the seventh. A run came in on an infield error to tie the game before Austin Beck lined a two-run double to right, just beyond Soularie's reach, to give the home squad an 8-6 lead.
After putting runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, Schobel grounded into a 6-4-3-5 triple play to end the ballgame. Pinch runner Jorel Ortega and Schobel were the first two outs. Cardenas slightly overran the third base bag and was subsequently thrown out at third.
The losing pitcher for the Wind Surge is Aaron Rozek, who drops to 1-2 on the season after surrendering three unearned runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in four innings out of the bullpen.
Wichita's penultimate game of the series with the Drillers at ONEOK Field is tomorrow, Saturday, May 18, with a 7:00 PM first pitch.
