December 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID- Joe Basaraba reached out and redirected a Joe Faust centering feed past Aces goaltender Kevin Carr with 49 seconds left in overtime to give the Idaho Steelheads (12-6-2) a 2-1 victory over the Alaska Aces (12-4-2) in front of 4,935 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Friday night. The goal capped a late comeback effort that forced overtime, and moved Idaho into a tie in the standings with Alaska with 26 points.
Moments after Philippe Desrosiers fought off a Tim Coffman opportunity on a 2-on-1 rush, the Steelheads came back into the Alaska zone with Faust slowly drifting to the top of the left circle. Faust feathered a pass behind the Alaska defense and Basaraba beat out Aces defenseman Marc-Andre Levesque to poke the puck off the post and in for his fifth goal of the season.
Basaraba now has three goals and eight points in his last eight games for Idaho.
The Steelheads trailed 1-0 with five minutes left in regulation. The Steelheads had just five shots in the third period, but good forecheck work by David Glen along the left-wing boards of the Alaska zone forced the puck loose. Glen spun a sharp-angled shot on goal, which Carr kicked out to the slot. Branden Troock pounced on the rebound and fired it past the Aces goaltender to tie the game.
In two games with the Steelheads this season, Troock has two goals, both third period goals to tie the game.
The Aces opened the scoring in the second period, a right-wing wrist shot by Daniel Moynihan at 6:01 for his seventh of the season.
The Steelheads killed off all three Alaska power plays in the game, improving Idaho to 28-of-30 over their last nine games. The most important kill came towards then end of the second period, a 5-on-3 disadvantage that lasted 1:30. The Steelheads killed it off, highlighted by Philippe Desrosiers sprawling glove save on league-leading goal scorer Peter Sivak. Desrosiers snagged the puck in front of a wide-open net, the best of his 33 saves.
The Aces will maintain control of first place with more regulation and overtime victories than Idaho, and they have now earned points in seven consecutive games. The Steelheads are 11-3-1 over their last 15 games. They have not lost consecutive games in regulation since the opening weekend of the season.
The Steelheads and Aces face off Saturday for the rubber match of their three-game series with a 7:10pm MT puck-drop at CenturyLink Arena. The Steelheads will host their 19th annual Teddy Bear Toss for Tots, with all donations benefiting the US Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign. The game is available on 1350AM KTIK, Cable One, and ECHLTV.

PLAY OF THE GAME: The Aces had their best chance of overtime after Corbin Baldwin fanned on a breakout pass in his own zone. The puck dribbled to the neutral zone before it was scooped up by Nolan Descoteaux and Tim Coffman for a 2-on-1. Descoteaux's shot was stopped, with a rebound left in the slot for Coffman. His shot was deflected, with both Desrosiers and Baldwin lunging for it, before deflecting over the top of the net. Moments later, it was the Steelheads rushing back the other way with numbers, as Joe Basaraba won a foot race to the front of the Alaska net and chipped in the Steelheads first overtime goal of the season.
