ECHL Idaho Steelheads

Game Day Storylines vs Alaska

December 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Steel Reel The Steelheads and Aces have split the first two games of their series and are tied in the standings with 26 points following the Steelheads' 2-1 overtime win on Friday night at CenturyLink Arena. The Aces six-game winning streak came to an end, but they did extend their points streak to seven games with the overtime point. The Steelheads improved their home record to 5-1-0 in their last six games in downtown Boise.

The Steelheads trailed late in the game on Friday, held off the board by Alaska goaltender Kevin Carr until the 15:02 mark of the third period. That's when strong forecheck work by David Glen led to a rebound goal for Branden Troock to help get the game to overtime. In the extra session, Joe Basaraba steered in his fifth of the year for Idaho's first 3-on-3 overtime goal this season.

Troock or Treat... Branden Troock has been a solid addition for the Steelheads, playing mostly on a line with Joe Basaraba and Travis Ewanyk, who assisted on both goals Friday. Troock has scored in each of his two games with Idaho, with both goals coming in the third period and both goals serving to tie the game. Troock is driving to the net and creating scoring chances, already with nine shots on goal.

Killin' It... While the Idaho power play ranks second in the ECHL heading into Saturday's action, it's the penalty kill making more noise in recent games. The Steelheads killing unit has climbed from the middle of the pack to eighth in the league after negating 28 of 30 disadvantages in the past nine games. That includes 1:30 of 5-on-3 killing time on Friday against the Aces. Idaho's kill is 6-for-6 in the series.

Weekend Warriors... Idaho has been happy to play on Friday and Saturday nights this season. The Steelheads are a combined 11-2-2 on Fridays and Saturdays, and they've outscored their opponents by 12 goals. They are 8-0-1 on the weekends at home.

Teddy Bear Toss for Tots The Steelheads host their 19th annual Teddy Bear Toss for Tots on Saturday, with toys donated benefiting the US Marine Corps' local Toys for Tots campaign.
