New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT - A pitcher's duel fell in the North Shore Spirit's (17-10, 42-29) favor Tuesday night, as the New Haven County Cutters (15-12, 40-32) were shutdown, 2-0, to open a pivotal three-game series at Historic Yale Field.

The Cutters began the day one game behind the first-place Spirit with 20 games remaining in the regular season.

Cutters' starter LHP Brad Whitworth (3-2) was outstanding in a 6.0 inning two-hit performance, allowing just a first inning solo home run to Spirit centerfielder Robert Fischer (2) and a second inning single to first baseman Jeff Brooks.

But Spirit starter LHP Bryan Morse (9-4) was also very effective, scattering six hits in eight shutout innings to earn the win.

The Cutters reached second base only twice and did not record an extra base hit in the game.

RHP Jarrett Stawarz pitched two perfect innings of relief for the Cutters before RHP Mark Comolli entered the game in the ninth inning and let up an insurance run for the Spirit.

A leadoff walk followed by the Spirit's third hit of the game from third baseman Vic Davilla led to a double steal and then a wild pitch on an errant intentional walk pitch, allowing Fischer to trot home from third base to give the Spirit a 2-0 advantage.

RHP Kevin Fitzgerald threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his 16th save of the season.

Game two of the three-game series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.

Cutters' LHP Rolando Valles (6-5, 3.33 ERA) will square-off with Spirit RHP Jared Trout (2-4, 5.01 ERA).
