Spirit receive more awards

DURHAM, NC-- DH Derrick Gibson of New Haven County and LHP Joey Siak of North Shore were selected by Sportsticker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 7-August 13. This is the fifth different Spirit to be named a Player of the Week this season.

Gibson, in seven games played, had a batting average of .455 (10-for-22) with four home runs, eight RBI, and six runs scored. He slugged 1.091 with an on-base percentage of .538 during that span. The Cutters went 3-3 for the week, including a 3-2 victory over the Quebec Capitales on August 13th. In that game, Gibson had a 3-for-4 outing that featured his 10th home run of the season and his third in two games. He is currently fourth in the league in home runs.

The Winter Haven, FL resident was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 13th round of the 1993 draft. Gibson played eight of his now 14 years in the Rockies organization reaching the majors in 1998 and 1999. In 17 games with the Rockies, Gibson hit .304 with two home runs and eight runs driven in. The 31-year-old last season split time with the Mississippi Braves, Richmond Braves, and his current team the New Haven County Cutters.

In two outings this week, Siak threw two complete game shutouts allowing nine hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 18 innings of work. For the season, the Asheville, NC resident has a record of 5-6 with an earned run average of 3.80. He has collected 50 strikeouts in 92 1/3 innings pitched.

The 24-year-old southpaw was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 draft. He pitched one season in the Cardinals' farm system before splitting time with the Joliet Jackhammers and his present club, the North Shore Spirit in 2005. With the Jackhammers and Spirit, Siak was 1-3 with an earned run average of 5.61.
