Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA-RHP Wayne Lundgren did not allow a run in eight shutout innings, retiring the final 16 batters he faced while DH Guye Senjem hit his 14th HR of the season and drove in both runs for the Rox in a tense 2-1 victory over the Sussex Skyhawks in front of 2,471 at Campanelli Stadium. Lundgren, making just his second start of the season and his eighth in his professional career, gave up just four singles and a walk, fanning six, and won for the second time this year. Senjem's solo HR in the sixth broke a scoreless tie and tied him with Jake Daubert (2004) for the Rox single-season HR record. RHP Jon Koch allowed a run in the ninth inning and put the tying and go-ahead runs on base but earned his 13th save of the season. The Rox have won eight of the last eleven games and improve to 16-12 in the second half (40-34 overall) while Sussex dropped their ninth straight game.
Lundgren allowed all four of his hits in the first three innings. After escaping the third with a double-play groundout, he did not permit another baserunner. Lundgren's eight-inning start was three innings longer than his previous long pro start. Senjem singled in his first two at-bats against RHP Derek Hawk, who dominated much of the game on the hill for the Skyhawks. Down in the count 1-2 in the sixth with two outs, Senjem ripped a line-drive HR over the right field wall. Senjem has homered in three of his last four games and has hit six blasts in his last 11 games. He added a RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth to give the Rox a 2-0 advantage.
Koch struck out the leadoff hitter in the ninth, only to walk two hitters to put the tying run on base. Sussex DH Dick Daly Jr. ended the shutout with two outs in the ninth on an RBI single to right, bringing the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. Koch induced a flyout to right to end the game and give the Rox just their third win against Sussex in 11 games in 2006.
Tomorrow, the Rox send LHP Rolando Viera (7-5, 2.67 ERA) to the hill to face fellow Can-Am All-Star RHP Jose Correa (6-2, 3.39 ERA) at 7:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium in the second game of the three-game set.
