WhiteWings Win Fifth Straight

Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDINBURG- Luis Noel flirted with a no-hitter and Jacinto Cipriota and Leivi Ventura hit home runs as the Jose Canseco-less Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings won their fifth consecutive game against the McAllen Thunder, 7-0.

Noel (6-2) allowed only one hit, a seventh inning bloop hit to shallow right field by the foul line from righthanded hitting Nelson Teilon, in a 6 1/3 inning stint. The Thunder (25-45) would collect only one more hit in the game on a drag bunt from Craig Hertler off Wander Perez.

Cipriota's home run, his first playing for the Tampa Bay Rays' Venezuelan Summer League affiliate in 2008, curled around the left field foul pole to give Rio Grande Valley a 4-0 lead off Jeff Sakowski (0-2) in the sixth, and Ventura's team leading fifth home run came with a man on to complete the scoring in the ninth.

Romulo "Alex" Ruiz drove in three runs on two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Ruddy Yan added two hits to extend his hitting streak to 15 games with two hits and scored two runs.

Sakowski, making a spot start for lefthander Demetrius Banks, who broke a finger on his right hand lifting weights, allowed two earned runs and six hits in six innings. It was Sakowski's first appearance as a starting pitcher as a professional.

Meanwhile, Canseco's debut with the WhiteWings has been delayed indefinitely due to legal issues, but Rio Grande Valley manager Eddie Dennis is not disappointed.

"We have a player here, Alberto Reyes, who has been in the major leagues for 13 years and bought shoes for the entire team earlier in the season. I do not want to break up team chemistry," Dennis said.
