Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

ABILENE, Tx -- Kevin Gelinas took the United League by storm. So much so that that the New York Yankees swooped in and purchased the contract rights of the powerful left-hander from the Abilene Prairie Dogs on Monday afternoon.

Gelinas, who signed with the Prairie Dogs on July 5 out of the University of California Santa Barbara, fired 16 2/3 innings of relief out of the Abilene bullpen, posting a 2.16 ERA, striking out 21 and compiling a 4-1 record.

Gelinas is a 6'5", 250 lbs left-hander who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 45th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft and again by the New York Mets in the 44th round in 2010. In both cases, he refused to sign professionally and instead elected to continue his college career.

The Thousand Oaks, Ca native is regularly in the mid nineties with his fastball and reached as high as 96 mph one week ago at Foster Field in San Angelo, Tx.

The Yankees have not yet announced where they will place Gelinas in their minor league system.

Abilene continues its season tonight when they host the San Angelo Colts at 7:05. The gates to Walt Driggers Field open at 6:00 and the game will be available on both 106.9 KLGD and on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
