Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Tied 7-7 in the bottom of the tenth inning, an error by the Edinburg RoadRunners allowed the WhiteWings to walk off winners for the fourth time in six games, winning 8-7.
With the bases loaded and David Peralta at the plate, who came into the night leading the league in batting average, the slugger hit a shallow fly ball to left field just beyond the infield. Derek Marshall, who had only one appearance in the outfield all season, dropped what would have been the second out. Instead, the dropped baseball allowed Francisco Santana to cross home for the winning run.
The WhiteWings scored six unanswered runs to win after trailing 7-2 in the fourth inning.
Kicking off the rally was Eric Gonzalez, back off the inactive list hours before the game, who doubled down the left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring home a run. Two batters later, Antonio DeJesus hit a sac fly to centerfield which brought the âWings to within three, trailing 7-4.
Picking up right where they left off, the WhiteWings tallied back-to-back doubles off the bats of David Peralta and Leivi Ventura to lead off the fifth inning, which brought the âWings to within two, behind 7-5.
An RBI double by DeJesus in the sixth inning brought the WhiteWings to within one, when the next batter, Wilmer Pino, hit an RBI triple to tie the score 7-7.
From there a battle between bullpens ensued. No runs were scored from the seventh inning onward as WhiteWings relief pitchers Mickey Cassidy and Juan Cedeño combined for no runs, allowing just three hits in four innings.
Edinburg was able to keep the WhiteWings off of the scoreboard in the later stages of the game with two scoreless innings thrown by Ryan Falcon.
Yet in the bottom of the tenth, the WhiteWings got past the RoadRunners bullpen, scoring the winning run, an unearned run, off of Jorge Quintero with the error charged to Derek Marshall.
Cedeño gets credited with the win, moving to 2-0 (7.36 ERA) while Quintero grabs the loss, going to 4-8 (7.36 ERA).
The WhiteWings play game two of their three-game series with Edinburg on Friday.
