Vipers Slither Past Fielders

August 4, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release

Zion, IL -The Fielders battled all night with the top team in the league; the Calgary Vipers but came up short falling to the Vipers by a final of 8-5 in ten innings Wednesday evening.

The hitting woes continued for the Fielders Wednesday with all five of their runs coming in the fifth inning. In that fifth inning the Fielders managed to bat around. Besides the fifth, the Fielders only had two other innings where they saw more than the minimum of three hitters make a plate appearance. Ryan Carr, who had pitched three innings of shutout ball, surrendered three runs in a long top of the fourth inning for the Calgary Vipers.

After leading for a few innings, the Fielders turned things over to pitcher Nick Kennedy to close things out with an out to go in the eighth. Kennedy got his man out in the eighth but struggled off the bat in the ninth. With a one-run lead, Kennedy served up a solo homerun down the right field line that just found its way over the fence to the back-up catcher Jeff Giocomini. Kennedy then got the side out for the Vipers until the tenth. Kennedy destructed in the tenth allowing eight batters to the plate with three of them scoring.

The Fielders made an attempt at a comeback in the bottom of the tenth with their first hitter, outfielder David Perren reaching base with a leadoff single. The next three batters then went down in order for the Fielders.

The Lake County Fielders will have a quick turnaround with the Calgary Vipers in a scheduled Double-Header Thursday. Game one is scheduled to start at 11:30 am and game two will start at 7 pm. All games can be heard on 1220 AM WKRS, wkrs1220.com, or at fieldersbaseball.com.
