WhiteWings Leapfrog Broncos for Fourth Place

LAREDO - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Laredo Broncos 3-2 in nine innings in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Veterans Field to take over fourth place by 0.5 games in the United League standings.

The top four teams at the end of the season make the playoffs. The WhiteWings (25-31) are now winners of five-straight while the Broncos (26-33) are losers of five-straight.

The Broncos got on the board against Andres Rosales in the bottom of the third. With one out, Jason Diaz reached on an infield-single, moved up two bases on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Murphy to make it 1-0.

That was it against Rosales, who struck out a season-high 12 while allowing four hits and two walks in six innings.

The WhiteWings got their first run against Santo Hernandez in the top of the fifth. With one out, Welinson Baez launched his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

Hernandez struck out 10 while allowing four hits and two walks in six innings.

The WhiteWings took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth against Brian Buchanan (5-4). With one out, Yeurys Tejeda reached on an error and stole second. When he stole third, the throw got away, allowing Tejeda to score.

Miguel Matos (3-3) was one strike away from ending the game, but threw a wild pitch on 0-2 to allow Diaz to score to tie the game at 2-2.

In the top of the ninth, Baez drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Javis Diaz to make it 3-2 WhiteWings.

Mickey Cassidy pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game three of this four-game series Wednesday at 7:35 p.m. Right-hander Matt Morris (0-0) is expected to face right-hander Matt Gibbs (3-2)
