Roadrunners Split Doubleheader

EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners split a doubleheader with the Coastal Bend Thunder Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with a 4-3 loss in game one and a 10-3 victory in game two.

In game one, the Thunder (22-35) got on the board against Mark DiBernardo (5-4) in the top of the first.

Ron Fenwick singled to left then moved to third after Levy Ventura hit a double to left center.

Brian Nichols followed with an RBI ground out to second base that allowed Fenwick to score from third giving Coastal Bend the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, a fielding error allowed Ventura to get aboard.

After moving to third on a single by Nichols, Ventura came into score on an RBI single by Alex Fernandez making it 2-0 Thunder.

The Roadrunners (33-21) answered back in the bottom of the fourth against Coastal Bend starter Toro Trevino (3-5).

Wilson Batista led off with a single to right field and Ambiorix Concepcion followed with his ninth home run of the season tying the game at two.

Mike Lewis started the top of the sixth with a single to left then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Patty Matera.

Dustin Smith followed with a single that put runners on the corners.

Fenwick hit an RBI single scoring Lewis from third and giving Coastal Bend the 3-2 lead.

J.J. Truillo pitched the final inning and two-thirds picking up his fifth save of the season and giving the Thunder the 3-2 victory.

In game two, the Roadrunners (34-21) got on the board in the bottom of the second against Carlos Rangel.

Back-to-back singles by Carlos Hereaud and Alexis Hernandez put two runners on for Eddie Wilson who then hit an RBI single scoring Hereaud.

Albert Gonzalez then hit an RBI double scoring Hernandez from third.

With runners at second and third, Wilmer Pino hit an RBI ground out scoring Wilson.

After a walk to Felix Molina, Wilson Batista hit a two-run double scoring Gonzalez and Molina giving Edinburg the 5-0 lead.

Ambiorix Concepcion led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field and then moved to second after Robert Matlock was walked.

After Hereaud was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Hernandez hit an RBI ground out scoring Concepcion from third.

With two outs, Gonzalez hit a two-run double scoring Matlock and Hereaud extending the Roadrunners lead 8-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Batista started the inning with a walk then moved to third after a throwing error.

Matlock followed with an RBI single to left scoring Batista and moving Concepcion to third.

Hereaud hit an RBI sacrifice fly allowing Concepcion to score making it 10-0 Roadrunners.

Coastal Bend (22-36) got on the board in the top of the sixth against reliever Austin Bridges.

A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Patty Matera to score.

Levy Ventura then hit an RBI ground out that allowed Dustin Smith to score from third.

An RBI single to left field by Alex Fernandez allowed Ron Fenwick to score made it 10-3 Edinburg.

Rey Silva pitched a scoreless seventh giving the Roadrunners the 10-3 victory and snapping their four-game losing streak.

Eric Montoya (7-2) picked up his league leading seventh win of the season after pitching five innings of shutout baseball and allowing just two hits.

The Roadrunners and Thunder continue their four-game series Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Wardell Starling (6-1) is expected to face Jake Liedka (0-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
