Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Laredo - Laredo Broncos starter Edgar Soto (0-1) was unable to record an out as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings' first four batters reached and scored en route to a 10-8 win tonight at Veterans Field.
Agust Septimo led off the game with a walk and Denys Lantigua followed with an infield single. Angel Reyes and Brian Nichols walked to force in a run and knock out Soto. Alberto Cruz followed with a two-run single off of Jason Herman, and after a Joaquin Rodriguez single, Welinson Baez grounded into a double play to score Nichols, making it 4-0 WhiteWings (16-19).
The Broncos (11-24) responded against Maximino de la Cruz in the bottom of the first. Luis Ugueto and David Cardona led off the game with walks. Mario Mendez hit a grounder to short. The flip to second recorded the out, but the relay throw to first was in the dirt and hopped past Nichols, allowing Ugueto to score, making it 4-1.
The Broncos loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third after Jamie Morales was hit by a pitch, Ugueto singled and Cardona walked. Ryan Dixon took over and allowed a two-run single to Mendez, making it 4-3.
In the top of the fourth, Jonathan Poterson and Sandy DeLeon hit leadoff singles. Septimo reached on a bunt-single that would've loaded the bases, but an error allowed everyone to move up an extra base. One out later, Reyes drew a seven-pitch walk to knock out Herman. Carlos Alvarez came in and gave up a grand slam to Nichols to make it 9-3.
The Broncos got all of those runs right back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Robert Moron doubled and OJ Garza hit an RBI- single. After a Morales single, Ugueto hit an RBI-single and Cardona hit an RBI-double. One out later, Argelis Nunez hit an RBI-single to make it 9-8.
Nichols hit his second home run of the game in the ninth inning to make it 10-8.
Jesus Sanchez (2-0) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing two hits for the win.
Julio Santana pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.
The WhiteWings and Broncos play game four of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:35 at Veterans Field. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (4-2) is expected to face right-hander Ryan Harris (2-4).
