
Whitecaps Silence Captains Bats

Lake County Captains News Release
(Midland, MI) -The Lake County Captains were limited to one unearned on just six hits on Tuesday night during a 5-1 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Captains stranded seven runners on base while allowing five runs on thirteen hits. The Whitecaps scored all their runs in the first four innings of the game.
West Michigan took the lead in the top of the first inning off Captains starter Jordan Milbrath. With one out, Ross Kivett doubled, moved to third on a single by Michael Gerber, and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Whitecaps would add another run in the top of the second inning. Zach Shepherd doubled to start the inning. He would come around to score when Derek Hill singled with two outs to push the Whitecaps lead to 2-0.
The Captains lone run would come in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Bobby Ison doubled off the wall in rightfield. David Armendariz followed with an infield single. A throwing error on the play by West Michigan second basemen, Joey Pankake, would allow Ison to score. The run would be unearned.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Whitecaps pulled away as they would send ten batters to the plate as they scored three runs. With one out, Shepherd walked. Austin Schotts followed with his first homerun of the season for a 4-1 lead. With two outs the Whitecaps would string together four straight hits from Hill, Kivett, Gerber, and Pankake. The final single from Pankake would bring Hill around for the fifth and final run of the game.
The Captains would have opportunities to get back into the game but were unable to capitalize on any as they stranded seven runners on base with no runner reaching second after the fifth inning.
Milbrath (2-5) took the loss after going 4.0 innings. He allowed 5 runs, all earned, on 11 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 2. Nick Pasquale would then go 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Justin Garcia followed with 2.0 innings. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Luke Eubank went the final 1.0 inning. He walked 1.
The Captains and Whitecaps will continue their series on Wednesday morning. Wednesday is a special 11 AM start and the Captains will host several local schools who are participating in the Captains Reading Program. The Captains will send Sean Brady (3-3) to the mound.
