BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Lansing Lugnuts (26-20) scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull within a run of the Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-19), but Bowling Green struck for three in the eighth to pull away and win, 8-4, Tuesday at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The two teams entered the series tied atop the Midwest League's Eastern Division.

In the eighth, a throwing error by reliever Kyle Bird allowed two runs to score and bring the Lugs within 5-3. Danny Jansen (1-for-4, RBI) added a run-scoring single to bring Lansing within a run.

Bird's error was Bowling Green's only error of the game; Lansing, one of the top defensive teams in the league, struggled far worse.

Three unearned runs in the sixth inning forced starter Chase De Jong (Loss, 4-4) out of the game, ending his game after 5.2 IP, four strikeouts and no walks. He was charged with one earned run due to three Lugs errors.

Jose Fernandez provided 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before Dusty Isaacs gave up three runs in the eighth, giving the Hot Rods an 8-4 edge.

Starter Henry Centeno (Win, 3-2) guided Bowling Green through seven innings, allowing one run.

Only D.J. Davis (2-4, RBI) scored against Centeno, launching his second home run of the season.

In the loss, Lansing center fielder Anthony Alford beat out a pair of infield singles to extend his on-base streak to 29 games.

Game two of the three-game set continues tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. The righty Jesus Tinoco (0-3, 4.19 ERA) matches right-handed arm Chris Pike (5-1, 2.85).

The next Lugnuts homestand is June 3-8 with three-game series against the Burlington Bees and Peoria Chiefs. For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
