Whitecaps Settle for Split

May 1, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

CLINTON, IA - The West Michigan Whitecaps broke out for one of their biggest innings in years, as a nine-run first inning resulted in a 9-7 victory over the Clinton LumberKings in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Ashford University Field.

The "Caps dropped the second game of the twin bill by a score of 13-2. It marks the second time this season the Whitecaps have split a doubleheader this season with the other coming against Fort Wayne on April 19 at Parkview Field.

The shocking first inning sent 12 Whitecaps batters to the plate, as Nick Ames and Chris Proctor chipped in with run-scoring doubles before Jeremiah Burks added a two-run single to increase the West Michigan lead to 5-0. Avery Tuck added a three-run homer and Reece Hampton followed with a solo shot of his own to complete back-to-back home runs and give the "Caps a 9-0 lead.

LISTEN: Whitecaps Nine-Run First

The outburst marks the largest single frame the Whitecaps have had since a nine-run second inning on July 5, 2016, as part of a 15-10 win over the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The LumberKings worked their way back into the contest, as a two-run homer by Sean Reynolds and a two-run single by Jerar Encarnacion helped Clinton pull within two at 9-7 before the "Caps bullpen finished the job.

In the second game, the LumberKings jumped to a 3-0 lead on West Michigan starter Xavier Javier when Reynolds blasted a three-run home run - his second home run of the doubleheader - before another two-run single by Encarnacion. Clinton chased Javier from the contest after throwing just 1.2 innings and giving up seven runs on four hits with three walks in the shortest appearance by a West Michigan starter this season.

While Javier (0-2) took his second loss of the season, Whitecaps pitcher Gio Arriera (2-1) took the win in the opener after lasting five innings and giving up five runs. Angel Reyes pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball to earn his second save. Infielder Wenceel Perez reached base five times to lead all "Caps players in the doubleheader.
