Whitecaps rally to tie, then give game to Lansing

COMSTOCK PARK - For the sixth time this season, the Whitecaps overcame a four run deficit. But after West Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a Lansing throwing error, the Lugnuts scored three in the top of the ninth for a 7-4 victory.

Lansing took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, which was highlighted by a two-run single by Jacob Butler. In the ninth inning, Butler delivered another two run single to break a 4-4 tie and send the Lugnuts on their way to the victory.

Josh Kauten pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Whitecaps in contention through the eighth. Ricky Steik pitched the ninth for West Michigan and gave up three runs.

Sean Stidfole held the ‘Caps to one hit through 4.2 innings until Will Rhymes delivered an RBI single to put West Michigan on the scoreboard for the first time.

Justin Justice came through with a two run single in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3.

In the eighth, West Michigan tied the game when Mike Hollimon hit a ground ball to second that was thrown wild toward first by Jason Armstrong. The play allowed Justice to score from second.

Anthony Girabaldi went 2-for-4 for Lansing and homered for the second consecutive game. His solo shot in the third was his eighth of the season and put the Lugnuts in front, 1-0.

Paul Phillips blew a save opportunity for only the second time this season when he pitched in the eighth, but stayed on for the ninth inning to earn the win.

Hollimon went 0-for-4 to end a nine game hitting streak.
