PEORIA, IL -- Marwin Vega, Austin Bibens-Dirkx, and Brian Kappel combined on a four hit shutout of the Peoria Chiefs Tuesday night at O'Brien Field. Ryan Scott drove in two runs with a double in the top of the fourth inning and that was enough as the Rattlers went on to a 3-0 win.
Peoria (71-62 overall, 30-34 second half) had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third inning, but Vega got out of the inning by getting Jake Whitesides to ground into a 1-2-3 double play.
The Rattlers (51-83, 24-40) scored three times in the top of the fourth inning. Scott's two-run double chased home the first two runs. An RBI single by Alex Liddi later in the inning made it 3-0. That was the last run the Rattlers would score, but the Rattler pitchers made those three runs stand.
Vega allowed all four hits, struck out five, and walked three over seven innings to snap a personal two game losing streak.
Bibens-Dirkx pitched a scoreless eighth inning with strikeout and a walk. Kappel worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save in seven opportunities.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Rattler pitching staff and their second in the last five games. The Rattlers shutout Clinton 1-0 on August 25.
The series continues Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. David Asher (1-2, 4.03ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria starting pitcher, Marco Carillo, will be making his Midwest League debut for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00pm.
