Whitecaps have first three game slide

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - For the first time this season, the Whitecaps have lost three games in a row following a 3-2 setback against Quad Cities. The Swing is on their longest winning streak of the season at five games.

Following a 1 hour and 50 minute rain delay at the start of the game, Quad Cities grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by A. J. Van Slyke.

Randy Roth delivered an RBI sacrifice fly and Bryan Anderson followed with a run-scoring hit to stretch the lead to 3-0.

West Michigan nearly pre-empted the third inning Swing rally but a throw from left fielder Mike Hernandez to catcher Joel Roa was dropped by Roa and Dan Nelson scored the first of the two runs in the inning. With a completed double play, the inning would have been over.

The Whitecaps responded with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of doubles from Will Rhymes and Mike Hernandez. Both Rhymes and Joel Roa scored in the inning. Hernandez and Pedro Cotto collected RBI. Cotto drove in the team's first run of the night on a ground out to first.

Cory Meacham survived and pitched seven innings as the starter for Quad Cities. He allowed six hits and three walks, but earned the win to improve to 4-3.

Josh Rainwater went five innings in his first start of the season for the Whitecaps. The right hander started four games earlier this season for Lakeland in the Florida State League. Rainwater allowed three runs (2 ER) on six hits with a walk and four strike outs.

The last three game losing streak for the Whitecaps was July 19-22, 2005.
